Bristol Bay, Alaska Pebble Mine: Update

Last week, as part of the Chefs Collaborative Sustainable Food Summit in Boulder, Elizabeth Herendeen, marketing director of the Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, spoke to a standing room-only crowd about the very real threat to Bristol Bay, Alaska’s sockeye salmon population, which is being severely threatened by a proposed open-pit mine known as Pebble Mine. If the mine were approved, it would sit in the headwaters of Bristol Bay’s most productive salmon habitat, which, on average, sees the return of 38 million sockeye each year, a number that equates to nearly half of the world’s sockeye salmon production.

And despite what Herendeen calls a “long, uphill climb,” collective opposition – including from Seattle Fish Co.
