Salmon. Perhaps the most well-known fish in the entire seafood universe. We know that salmon is good for us – high in omega-3’s, rich in Vitamin B, a substantial source of protein. But what about a salmon that promises to deliver that, and more? Enter Kvarøy Arctic Salmon.
Kvarøy (pronounced “Kwa-ray”) is redefining the salmon-farming industry through innovation and deep concern for the future of fish. Seattle Fish Company is excited to offer our customers a delicious and sustainable salmon from a company that is taking the time to do things differently.
So what makes Kvaroy Arctic salmon so special?
Location, location, location. Kvaroy is an island located on the Norwegian Inner Passage on the Arctic Circle. You can reach it by flying into Oslo…then eight hours by train, taxi, and two boats.
The close-knit island community shares a worker’s lifestyle and a grand vision: to evolve open water salmon farming into a sustainable practice that protects the environment and promotes animal welfare while providing a healthy source of protein for a growing world.
Kvarøy Arctic salmon has double the omega-3 content of other farmed salmon. This has been achieved naturally through pioneering work with Corbion to use fermented microalgae as a sustainable source of omega-3s. Instead of dragging large nets across the ocean for small feeder fish, Kvarøy Arctic is deriving omega-3s directly from the microalgae the small fish would consume. The food chain is bypassed, enhancing the wild fish population. The non-GMO algae oil is efficiently produced using energy from spent sugar cane biomass. Nothing is wasted.
It has all the certifications. Kvarøy Arctic salmon is officially certified by :
-The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)
-Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP)
-American Heart Association Heart Check Certified
Unbeatable flavor. The flavor of Kvarøy Arctic salmon is informed by the farm’s breathtaking location. The waters near Kvarøy are cool and clear, with a deep-fjord current that keeps the water fresh and helps exercise the salmon, reducing fat levels and giving this beautiful fish a pristine, clean flavor.
The flesh is semi-firm to firm; naturally rich with no residual oiliness on the palate, providing a beautiful mouthfeel that will appeal to seafood lovers everywhere. The color of the flesh is medium orange, a natural color that occurs from astaxanthin, a carotenoid found in krill and algae, which is also a powerful antioxidant.
