Double-time in Washington D.C. – CRA and NFI Trips to the Capitol

While political legislation may not be the sexiest part of our business, it has a dramatic impact on how our industry operates. Therefore, Seattle Fish Co. is highly involved at both a local and national level to help promote and lobby initiatives that affect our business, our customers, and the fisherman from whom we buy our seafood. Just over the past few months, Derek Figueroa, COO for Seattle Fish Co, has taken to trips to Washington, D.C.  The first trip, Derek went as a board member of the Colorado Restaurant Association alongside National Restaurant Association to advocate for the Affordable Care Act. Specifically, they discussed definitions for a full-time employee, reporting requirements, increasing the definition of a small employer, restoring the 15-year tax depreciation, and immigration (just to name a few).

The trip included meetings with Senator Bennet and Representatives Perlmutter, Tipton, Coffman, Lamborn, Gardner, Polis along with staffers for Representative DeGette and Senator Udall.

The second trip back to the nation’s Capitol was with The National Fisheries Institute to discuss seafood safety with legislators and request support to cut the wasteful spending that is being driven by a specific amendment in the Farm Bill.  It was a big month!
