President Obama gave a statement the other week to protect Bristol Bay and nearby lands from any offshore drilling and exploration. “The President’s announcement was a major victory for Bristol Bay and a step in the right direction,” says Elizabeth Herendeen, marketing director for Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association and a dear friend of Seattle Fish Co. Herendeen continued to explain that although a great step, it is just a step in the fight against the proposed Pebble Mine. The next step to protect Bristol Bay will be a decision regarding land-based mineral development under the Clean Water Act. This ruling will affect the waters which feed into the bay. This region of Alaska is home of the world’s largest wild sockeye run and supplies forty percent of the United States’ wild seafood consumption.
Seattle Fish Co. hopes this positive momentum is a glimpse of what is to come to protect one of the world’s most valuable wild fisheries!
