Wild Salmon

Wild Salmon

One of nature’s original health foods, wild salmon is wholesome and indisputably one of the most sustainable seafood choices that is delicious, good for you, and good for the planet. The management of the wild Alaskan salmon fishery is second to none and these fish swim freely in the cold, clean waters of the North Pacific, allowing them to spawn, grow and mature at a natural rate. As a result, wild Alaska salmon have a robust flavor, color and texture and are naturally chock full of healthy omega-3’s.

Alaska king, or chinook (the Alaska native word for king salmon), salmon are the largest and most prized species of Pacific salmon. They are the most expensive of all salmon species and are often found in upscale restaurants and better supermarkets. Most Pacific salmon spend one to three years at sea; kings can stay out as long as five years before returning to where they spawn. Chinooks are harvested primarily by trawlers, but are also fished by seiners and gillnetters. They can reach upwards of 50 pounds, but the bulk of the commercial catch ranges between 11 and 18 pounds. Visit www.alaskaseafood.org for more information.
