Pete Marczyk was born and raised in Massachusetts and moved to Denver in 1990, following one of his favorite prep school teachers out to Colorado. He supported himself with house painting, plastering and wallpaper hanging. Later that year, he was hired at Merrill Lynch in Denver as a financial consultant. He worked at the downtown location until he was transferred to the Boulder office in 1995 to head a burgeoning debt management department. In 1998 he decided to focus on the mortgage business and was employed by Keycorp Mortgage in Denver.
However, his passion was for a stock of a different sort, and while working for Keycorp, he began to create the outline for Marczyk Fine Foods. His vision was for a scalable version of a small market, a World Class Neighborhood Market that would source the best ingredients from all over Colorado, the USA and Europe.
In April 2002 Marczyk Fine Foods opened its doors, and Pete quickly became “Denver’s most eloquent grocer.” He is the resident expert on everything from American meat production to mushroom foraging. When the mad cow outbreak became news in December 2003, local TV stations knew they would find a knowledgeable source of information at Marczyk’s. The same went for the Chinese seafood scare of August 2007.
Pete has always been passionate about cooking with the best ingredients; he advocates and teaches simple preparation. He is an inveterate experimenter with a hell-of-a palate who creates many of Marczyk’s recipes. Marczyk Fine Foods, located at the corner of 17th and Clarkson, is a shopping oasis in a world of factory food and big box retail. Its specialties are Niman Ranch meats, cheeses from near and far, fresh local produce, seafood, and thoughtfully selected pantry items from around the world. Learn more about Marczyk’s fish, meat, food, politics, wine and the Red Sox on their blog.
Pete is also very involved in local organizations. He is currently the treasurer of the Colorado Mycological Society and is on the boards of the Denver Athletic Club and Colorado Organic Producers Association.
